I am buying the same seed mix as before, but now, the birds won't
eat it. What should I do?
A. There are several possible causes for this situation. First
is the bird feeder itself; make sure the feeder is clean and does not contain
moldy grain. Always important is a constant source of water near the feeder;
running water at your birdbath will help draw birds to your yard. The time
of year and the possible migration of the birds using your feeder considerations.
Another consideration is the possibility of a new house cat or predatory
animal in the neighborhood.
Does Audubon Park treat or coat its bird food with chemicals that
might harm birds or wildlife?
A. Audubon Park Co. uses only natural ingredients in its birdfood.
We do not use any gimmicky sprays or chemicals that would harm wildlife.
How can I keep squirrels out of my bird feeder?
A. Positioning of your bird feeder is very important in keeping
squirrels away. Squirrels can easily jump 10 feet from a fence or tree. You
need to position your feeder where squirrels cannot jump to it. You can
try feeding the squirrels at a different station. Some people use a bird
feeder with a baffle on it to prevent squirrels from getting into it. Other
people feed only safflower to their birds; safflower is a seed squirrels
do not like, but birds learn to like it.
I am going on vacation. Should I stop feeding the birds so they do
not rely on my feeder, then not find feed while I am gone?
A. Even birds that are accustomed to eating at a feeder do not
depend only on that feeder; they normally have other food sources. If possible,
you can have someone fill your feeder while you are gone. If your feeder
does go empty, the birds will return within a reasonable time after you
begin to fill your feeder again.
The store I have been buying your products from no longer carries
them. Where can I purchase your products?
A. Please e-mail or call us; we will help you locate a retailer
for our products near you.
Should I stop feeding during the summer months?
A. We encourage you to feed birds year-round. In fact, spring
and summer months can be difficult times for birds to find food, especially
since they are busy raising their young. Best of all, watching birds at
your feeder year 'round is a delight.
Where should I keep my bird food?
A. Keep your bird food in a tight metal or plastic container outside
the main living area of your home. Always keep it away from your family
food storage area. Bird food that sits for a long period of time does attract
insects and rodents, but properly stored, should not present a problem.
I have been purchasing Audubon bird food from a local retailer and
birds do not seem to eat it as well as I would like.
A. Standard bird food mixes are designed to attract a variety
of birds in a large geographical area at an attractive price point. Most
retailers also carry specialized bird food items and gourmet mixes that
your local birds may find more delicious than the standard mixes. Many consumers
also buy a bag of sunflower seeds to incorporate into their own recipes. |
