Start feeding the birds

Backyard bird feeding is a great way to observe wildlife and an enjoyable activity for the entire family.

Bird-watching is one of the fastest growing hobbies in the United States; second only to gardening! It’s easy to understand why. Birds are fun and relaxing to watch.

The nice thing about birding is that you can do it anywhere and all year long. All it takes to get the attention of wild birds is:

  1. Know your local birds. Here’s a map and list of popular birds.
  2. Feed them their favorite food
  3. Make them feel at home with trees, shrubs, flowers and a bird house
  4. Give them bath and drinking water
  5. Keep them safe: Make sure your seed, suet or nectar is made-in-the-USA and place feeders away from windows and predators

To improve the overall habitat in your yard so that more birds will visit your property place bird feeders, bird baths and nest boxes. Additionally, plant a variety of trees, shrubs, and flowers for shelter. These can provide good nesting sites, winter shelter, places to hide from predators, and natural food supplies that are available year-round.

One of the rewards of backyard bird-watching is that by cultivating a habitat to attract birds you can contribute in a small, but valuable way, to reclaiming the natural world for wildlife.
